Physical Exam Q & A

What can I expect during a physical exam?

A physical exam is a dedicated time you meet with your primary care physician to evaluate your health and get answers to any questions or concerns you may have. Your physical exam includes a head-to-toe evaluation as well as a series of screenings and tests, depending on your age and health.

Physicals may include any or all of the following:

  • On-site lab testing, including blood work and urinalysis
  • Neurological exam to check muscle strength and reflexes
  • Weight check and body mass index (BMI) calculation
  • Lung function test (spirometry)
  • Blood pressure check
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Skin check

Physical exams also include a comprehensive evaluation of your personal and family medical history. This information helps Dr. Shajan determine if there are additional or outside screenings you may need, such as a mammogram.

How often do I need a physical exam?

In general, Dr. Shajan recommends coming in to The Doctors Office & Walk-In Clinic once a year around the same time for a physical exam. This checkup is a preventive care screening and is necessary even if you’re generally healthy and never seem to get sick.

If you have a chronic health issue, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, or if you’re older, you might need more frequent visits. For these situations, Dr. Shajan might encourage you to come to the clinic for physicals twice a year or even quarterly.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for a physical exam?

It’s helpful to make a few preparations before your or your child’s upcoming physical exam at The Doctors Office & Walk-In Clinic. If you’re new to the practice, for instance, try to request medical records from your previous primary care physician before your visit.

You should also:

  • Write down all concerns, questions, or health changes
  • Know the first day of your last menstrual period (if applicable)
  • Make a note of any prescription or over-the-counter medications you take

Lastly, certain blood tests require a short period of fasting, often overnight. Usually, it’s just blood cholesterol or diabetes screenings that may require fasting. If you’re due for blood work, ask a team member if you need to fast beforehand.

The Doctors Office & Walk-In Clinic offer comprehensive physical exams for every member of your family. You can book a physical online or by phone, or you can walk in during normal business hours.
